MAMOUN'S

119 Macdougal Street, Greenwich Village and 30 Saint Marks Place , NEW YORK .

MAMOUNS.jpg

Waiting for their FALAFEL MAMOUN,S

Mamoun's has long been one of the greatest Cheap Eat Deals in town. Mamound Chater, an immigrated to New York in the late 1960s from Damascus, Syria. He opened Mamoun's Falafel at 119 Macdougal Street in 1971, and claimed it to be the 1st Falafel Joint in America. Mamoun's is World Famous. It's a tiny little spot that churns out Falafel and other Middle Eastern foods around the clock t Days a Week, 365 days a year. The Falafels are tasty and a great cheap eat at $3.50 a pop as of this writing.  People line up every single day to get their Falafel, Hummus or whatever, but the Falafel is and always will be the King.

The story of Mamoun Chater and his little falafel stand is quite amazing. That little stand on Macdougal Street makes a small fortune by itself, but the family has opened numerous other Falafel Joints in New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York. It's a winning combination of a tasty sandwich, that's quite inexpensive, and healthy to boot.

El Castillo de Jagua

113 Rivington Street, near Essex, on the Lower East Side of New York

El Castillo de Jagua

113 Rivington Street, LES, New York

Great Cheap Eats, including their awesome CUBAN SANDWICH (CUBANO)

Rice and Beans

Perrnil (Roast Pork Leg) Goat Stew, Cuban Coffee, and More ...

I've been going to Castillo de Jagua for some 30 years now. I love it, always have. I used to go to a few other Carribean Latin joints in the area, but some of those are gone. Castillo de Jagua remeains, and these days whenever I get a hankering for my beloved Cubano Sandwich, de Jagua is me go to place for the famous Cuban Sandwich, so I head right on over to Rivington Street to get my fix until next time. I used to eat at least 1 or even two of these bad boys every week when I lived on Avenue A back in the 80s and early 90s. I get up, walk down Avenue A, cross Houston Street and on to Essex Street until I hit Rivington, make a right, and there I was. Sometimes I'd get Pernil, which is that delicious Roast Pork Leg that Domincans, Cubans, and Puerto Ricans know how to cook up so well. An order of Pernil (Roast Pork Leg) comes with Rice and Beans (Red or Black), and maybe some fried plantains (Fried Bananas) if you're lucky. Yes it was always one of two items that I'd get, either a Cuban Sandwich (Cubano) or an order of Pernil, occasionally Mofongo, and I really loved Gandulas which was some white rice with gandulas beans mixed in.

Anyway, if you've never been to one of these Carribean Latin Cuisine Restaurants, it's high time you did. They're a New York institution that serve dam tasty food, dishes you've probably never had, and at reasonable prices to boot.

These Sandwiches are dam Tasty. They're served on awesome crispy French Baguette Bread, and filled with Chicken, Beef, or Pork, fresh Cucumbers and Cilantro and whatever. This is one of the Best Sandwiches in town, and as far as Vietnamese Bahn Me goes, they are the # 1 joint in all of New York, "Trust me, I've been going there for years. Long before most American's ever knew or dreamt about this lovely little thing. That's the way it usually is. I usually know about many culinary delights years before the rest of America catches on. This has been the case with the Cubano Sandwich (my 1st was 1983), the Negroni (I had my 1st in 1985) , Aperol Spritz (1995), and the Vietnamese Bahn Mi, I started eating around 2000, and Vietnamese Pho (Beef Broth rice noodle soup) I discovered way back in 1983.

"So if you want to know what the hot thing Americans will be eating 10 years from now, ask me."
