History of the Italian Submarine Sandwich

SUBMARINE SANDWICH

"Look at the Gabagool"

A Submarine Sandwich, also known as a “Hero” in New York, Hoagie in Philadelphia, and “Grinder” in New England the Mid-West & California, and a Bomber in Upstate New York. These Sandwiches consists of Italian or French Bread split down the middle in two long pieces. In between the bread goes; Salami, Cheese, Ham, slice tomato, lettuce, and sliced onion topped with Olive Oil, Vinegar, Oregano, Salt & Pepper. This is the basic “Hero” Sandwich, Sub, Hoagie or whatever you call it depending on where you live. In Jersey they are Submarines or simply Subs. Hero Sandwiches (Northern NJ & NY) were invented around the turn of 1900’s by Italian-American immigrants on the East Coast of the United States, in cities such as; New York, Boston, Portland Maine, Providence Rhode Island, Philadelphia, and Paterson, New Jersey where it is said the first Submarine Sandwich was invented by one Dominic Conti (1874-1954) an Italian immigrant from Montella, Italy a town in the province of Avellino near Naples (Napoli), Italy where much of Italian-America’s dishes come from along with Sicily, Calabria, and Abruzzo. Conti is said to have named his sandwiches Submarines after seeing a Museum Exhibition at The Paterson Museum of a recovered 1901 Submarine The Fenian Ram. As his sandwiches made on long loaves of Italian Bread resemble the Submarine, Conti named his sandwiches Submarine Sandwiches, which later became known  as Subs.” Conti’s granddaughter says, “My grandfather came to America in 1895 from Montella, Italy. In 1910, he started an Italian Grocery Store in Paterson (Silk City), New Jersey, which was called “Dominic Conti’s Grocery Store” on Mill Street where he was selling traditional Italian Sandwiches. His sandwiches were made from a recipe he brought with him from Italy which consisted of a long crusty roll filled with cold cuts, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, onions, Oil & Vinegar, Italian Herbs & Spices, Salt & Black Pepper. The sandwich started with a layer of cheese and ended with a layer of cheese (so the Bread wouldn’t get soggy).
So these Italian Submarine Sandwiches as they are known in Jersey, are Grinders in New England, Hoagies in Philly and in New York they’re most commonly known as a Hero, of which the name is credited to New York Herald Tribune food-writer Clementine Paddle-ford in the 1930’s. As far as who invented these sand-wiches, there are a few different theories of who invented the first one and where it was. Some say in the sandwich was created in Scollay Square to entice Sailors stationed at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, and that the term Grinder the name of the sandwich in New England (as well as the Mid-West) comes from dockworkers who were called Grinders. Another theory has the Sandwich originating in Portland, Maine. We feel this is highly unlikely and that it was Dominic Conti of Montella Italy and Paterson, New Jersey who invented this Italian-American icon, and one that has been adopted by the whole country after its birth on the East Coast and of Italian neighborhoods.
Now a days there are a multitude of horrible chain Sub Stands like Subway, of which the ingredient are inferior to the original sandwiches of which you can still get at any good Italian Deli in New York, New Jersey, in Philly, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Boston, and Baltimore.

Julia Roberts da Michele Pizza Coming to New York

JULIA ROBERTS Eating PIZZA at da MICHELE

NAPOLI

"I'm in Love I'm having a relationship with my Pizza."

Julia Roberts in EAT PRAY LOVE

JULIA Mangia la PIZZA

"It's your moral imperative to fall in Love with that Pizza."

Julia Roberts ... EAT PRAY LOVE

Antica Pizzeria Da Michel of Naples is Coming to NEW YORK

Via Cesare Sersale 1/380139, Naples, Italy

Yes the famed Pizzeria Da Michele of Napoli is coming to New York's Greenwich Village.
The Pizzeria made hugely famous by actress Julia Roberts after she shot a scene for her movie
Eat Pray Love eating Pizza with a friend. Ever since then tourists from around the World but
especially American's flock there everyday and wait in line for two hours or more just to get inside and eat the Pizza.

And don't think just because it's so busy and now one of Naples top Tourists Attractions, if not the single most popular one, that the Pizza might be lacking. No, "No Way." The Pizza is a t the pinnacle of the Pizza making art, just as it was before Julia Roberts ever set her pretty little face in the place, as it is now, and hopefully always will be.

Antica Pizzeria Da Michele is coming to New York and will be located at 2 Bank Street in Greenwich Village. Will it be a hit? There's no guarantee. Let's not forget the the not as popular, still
Gino Sorbillo Pizzeria in Naples is one of Napoli's most famous and popular pizzerias of all, both with native Neapolitans and tourist alike. Sorbillo came to New York, many, including Gino himself expected it to make a huge splash and become a huge success, It has not. Far from it, the place is not popular and really not that successful at all. Will Da Michele find the same fate in coming to
New York? Who knows? One can never really predict these things for sure when it comes to
New York City. People have ideas and make calculated risk, but you never really know until things happen and get under way whether they will work in New York or not. The Big Apple can be quite a tough nut to crack. However, all this being said, I myself do have a gut feeling where Gino Sorbillo Pizzeria has failed to catch on and become a great success in New York, it is my gut feeling that
Antica Pizzeria Da Michele of Naples will fare far better in New York than Sorbillo Pizzeria. I think
Da Michele will catch on and become a Big Hit. But who know, I might be wrong, and we will have to wait until they open and get under way, whether New Yorker's fall in love with Da Michele in New York as Julia ROberts character in Eat Pray Love did, where Roberts said, "I think I'm in Love? I'm
having a relationship with my Pizza." And so we will have to wait and see if New Yorker's do the same in New York, as Julia Roberts did in Da Michele Pizzeria in Naples, and if "New Yorkers Fall in Love, and have a relationship with Da Michele Pizza." We waiting and wish them well.

Basta!

The Old Rocco Restaurant Carbone Neon Sign

Michael Gazzo

As Frankie Pantangeli

The GODFATHER

The GODFATHER Part II

Frank Pentangeli is a fictional character from the 1974 film The Godfather Part II, portrayed by Michael V. Gazzo. Gazzo was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance, which he lost to Robert De Niro, his co-star from the same film (as young Vito Corleone). He is nicknamed "Frankie Five Angels" from his last name, which is formed from the Greek-derived prefix penta- (meaning "five") and the Italian word angeli ("Angels").

Noel Quotes lines from Francis Ford Coppola's

The GODFATHER

This is my brother-in-law Noel quoting lines from
The Godfather, and making some quite funny Satirical Humor.

He delivers some lines from the movie, but in a very funny way
as opposed to the seriousness drama of the film.

I was having a nice Sunday afternoon lunch with my sister Barbara and
brother-in-law Noel (he's a Comedian). We had a memorable lunch at the old Rocco's Restauarant on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, which sadly closed a few years ago, and now the restaurant Carbone is in the former Rocco's space, and using the old Rocco's neon sigb with Carbone superimposed over where it used to say Rocco's.

Rocco's was a typical old-school Italian restaurant of Greenwich Village, known as
a "Red Sauce Joint." The restaurant was beloved by Italian-American's in the neighborhood, and there was quite an uproar when the people of Rocco's (after 70 years in business) were pushed out by the landlord for the higher rent paying tenants of the Major Food Group to make way for the restaurant Carbone owned by; Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff  Zalaznick who had a successful run with their first two restaurants Torrisi Speciality Foods and Parm.

It's very funny, "Watch It" !!!

Harrys Bar Venice Worlds Coolest

HARRY;S BAR

The World's Coolest Restaurant? Why, it's Harry's Bar,Venice of course. Without a doubt. There is no contest for any to compete. Well many will beg to differ, but I know better, and better than most. No Brag, Just Fact! Let me tell you why.
If you are in any of the Great Renowned Cities of the World, cities such as; New York, Paris, Rome, Bangkok, Tokyo, London, Hong Kong, wherever. There will in all these cities be a number of restaurants where the In-Crowd, the Jet-Set, Those in The Know, the Movers-and-Shakers of the World will go to. There are usually at least 6 to 12 restaurants for those in the know to go to. For example, if you are in my City, New York and you are one of these people, "Those In the Know," you might go to any one of these restaurants. right now in the year 2011 these restaurants would be; Minetta Tavern, Bar Pitti, The Waverly Inn, Pastis, Momofuku Ssam, The Standard Grill, John Dory at The Ace Hotel, and at least 6 others. Same goes for LA, London, Paris, Rome, and so-on.
In Venice there are many restaurants, but really just one more or less that "Everyone Who is Anyone" will go when in town. One, that one is "Harry's Bar." No other restaurant in the World quite like it. If you are of the Jet Set, The In Crow, those "In-The-Know," you'll know one thing for sure, when you go to Harry's Bar you will be amongst the all of The "in Crowd" will be there and nowhere else. Well this is a bit of an exaggeration to make a point, but this point is true 85% of the time.

Ernest Hemingway & Friends at Harry's Bar

And of the place, Harry's Bar, Venice. And i keep saying Harry's bar Venice, for it is thee only one, but there are many others around the World with the same name. There is only one Great "Harry's Bar" and that is Harry's Bar, Venice at the Vaporetto stop of San Marco.
Yes, and of Harry's. The restaurant is Wonderful. It has a beautiful casual elegance in the decor. The place is always filled with the "Beautiful People," the service is great, and the food Fabulous. Though at a price. Harry's bar is very expensive. For some this is of no consequence, but if it is expensive for you, it is definitely worth a splurge. The place is awesome.
After-All, they invented the "Bellini" Cocktail here. And
Beef Carpaccio as well.

If you go to harry's Bar, you will Love it. The place is filled with quite a exciting energy. It's a experience you'll always remember. So, do remember, The World's Coolest restaurant, Harry's Bar, Venice that is.
